Open casting call for B'way's 'Tarzan'

NEW YORK, Aug. 22 (UPI) -- Producers of the new Broadway musical, "Tarzan," say they are planning an open casting call for an actor to play the tree-swinging title character.

Auditions for the Disney production are scheduled for Aug. 29 at Manhattan's Here Arts Center.

Two-time Tony Award-winner Bob Crowley is set to direct and design sets and costumes for "Tarzan," which is slated to open in Spring 2006 at a theater to be determined.

Oscar and six-time Grammy Award-winner Phil Collins has written the music and lyrics, expanding his songs from Disney's hit film into a complete theatrical score.

Tony Award-winner David Henry Hwang has written the book, adapted from the screenplay by Tab Murphy, Bob Tzudiker and Noni White and based on the novel, "Tarzan of the Apes," by Edgar Rice Burroughs.

The production is seeking a "thrilling pop/rock singer," who is strong and toned, but not the traditional Tarzan muscle man, to play a man in his 20s caught between the worlds of gorillas and humans.

Equity and non-Equity singers of all cultural backgrounds are encouraged to try out.
