Deadheads want a U.S. Jerry Garcia stamp

WASHINGTON, Aug. 22 (UPI) -- There's a grassroots campaign under way to convince the U.S. Postal Service to put out a stamp in honor of the late Jerry Garcia.

Aug. 9 was the 10th anniversary of the death of the Grateful Dead leader and that's the day a petition went up on the Internet urging a Garcia stamp, the San Francisco Chronicle reported.

With little publicity, more than 6,000 people have signed the petition so far at www.petitiononline.com/Garcia/petition.html, the newspaper said.

Supporters say Garcia, who is associated with the hippy movement as well as drug use, should be no more controversial than Elvis Presley, who got a stamp in his honor in 1993 despite his death after years of prescription drug abuse.

The Citizens' Stamp Advisory Committee is hit with about 50,000 suggestions annually for new stamps, the Chronicle said.
