L.A. rejects settlement in B.I.G. case

LOS ANGELES, Aug. 18 (UPI) -- The Los Angeles City Council has rejected an $18 million settlement offer from the family of slain rapper Notorious B.I.G.

The family of Christopher Wallace, 24, made the offer after a mistrial was declared in their wrongful death suit, the Los Angeles Times reported. In declaring the mistrial, the judge charged city authorities with deliberately withholding evidence in the case.

The rapper was gunned down in March 1997 after attending a music industry party. The family has claimed city police officers in cahoots with Death Row Records founder Marion "Suge" Knight pulled off the killing.

Wallace's relatives filed suit in federal court Wednesday asking a judge to force the city to pay their legal costs from the mistrial.

The City Council rejected the $18 million settlement Wednesday.
