'Princess Bride' goes from screen to stage

NEW YORK, Aug. 17 (UPI) -- "The Princess Bride" is the latest movie about to get the Broadway musical treatment.

William Goldman is adapting his 1987 movie based on his 1973 novel for the stage with Tony-winning composer Adam Guettel, the New York Post reported.

Goldman and Guettel are going to write the musical first, then look for a producer, the Post said.

At age 74, Goldman is a successful screenwriter with credits including "Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid," "All the President's Men" and "Marathon Man."

He wrote one musical with his brother, James, and composer John Kander, "A Family Affair," in 1962. His only stage play was the comedy "Blood, Sweat and Stanley Poole."

Guettel, 40 -- who won a Tony this year for his score for "The Light in the Piazza" -- is the grandson of the legendary Richard Rodgers.
