ABC takes Jennings' name off newscast

NEW YORK, Aug. 15 (UPI) -- ABC News has taken late anchor Peter Jennings' name off its nightly newscast.

For the first time in more than two decades, the network's evening newscast Monday night was billed simply as "World News Tonight."

"After consulting with (Jennings' widow) Kayce and the family, we concluded that leaving the broadcast's title as it was through last Friday was an appropriate tribute to Peter," ABC News President David Westin told TV Guide Online Monday. "But, of all people, Peter insisted on accuracy. As much as we would have it otherwise, from now on 'World News Tonight with Peter Jennings' will be known simply as 'World News Tonight.'"

Jennings died of lung cancer on Aug. 7.
