DULLES, Va., Aug. 9 (UPI) -- ABC News executives say there are no plans to fill the chair left empty by the death of anchor Peter Jennings any time soon.
However, the Hollywood Reporter said Tuesday sources speculate "Good Morning America" co-anchor Charlie Gibson was among the short list of likely candidates to succeed Jennings on "World News Tonight."
Jennings, who died of lung cancer Sunday at age 67, had not anchored the evening news report since April.
Gibson and Elizabeth Vargas had been filling in since then and ABC News spokesman Jeffery Schneider said things would stay the same for an indeterminate amount of time.
"It is far too premature for us to even think about that," Schneider told the Reporter. "Charlie and Elizabeth will continue to anchor the broadcast."
