LOS ANGELES, Aug. 5 (UPI) -- Nearly four decades after Francis Ford Coppola acquired the rights to Jack Kerouac's "On the Road," the Beat classic is finally headed to the silver screen.
The movie is in development with Walter Salles on board as director and Jose Rivera writing the script, Daily Variety reported Friday. Salles and Rivera collaborated on the 2004 drama "The Motorcycle Diaries."
Kerouac's 1950s book is based on his adventures hitchhiking across the country with his friend, Neal Cassady.
Coppola tried to get the project off the ground several times, Variety said, but went through a slew of writers who failed to compose a script to his liking.
