Samantha Bee solves Daily Show mystery

CALGARY, Alberta, Aug. 2 (UPI) -- Most people want to be on TV so they agree to go on "The Daily Show" knowing they will probably be skewered, fake journalist Samantha Bee reveals.

Bee told Tuesday's Calgary Sun every subject is told the interview is for Comedy Central's fake news show and they "go into it with their eyes open."

It doesn't hurt that "The Daily Show" is anchored by media darling Jon Stewart and its biting commentary on current events is embraced by a wide range of hipsters, intellectuals and young adults.

Bee said she was part of the Toronto comedy troupe Atomic Fireballs when she was lured across the border to join the fake news staff in 2003.

"They were looking for a woman and they began to explore other nations," she said.

One of her first assignments was an expose' on gay penguins at New York's Central Park Zoo. "Attendance skyrocketed after the story," she said.

Bee said she is proud "The Daily Show" is a hit in Canada, where it airs nightly on CTV.

"Everyone's really excited (about that) because in the States we're not on a network, we're on cable," Bee said.
