'American Idol' sets audition dates

LOS ANGELES, July 29 (UPI) -- Fox TV's "American Idol" Friday announced audition dates and sites for the thousands of singers vying to be the next Kelly Clarkson or William Hung.

Auditions for 2006 season kick off Aug. 18 at San Francisco's Cow Palace -- a 14,000-seat arena that is also the smallest site on the list.

Talent searches will also take place in Chicago's Soldier Field with a 61,500 seating capacity and Boston's Gillette Stadium, which holds 68,756.

Other sites include Austin, Texas, Memphis and Denver.

New York and Los Angeles hopefuls will have to travel, however, because no auditions were scheduled in the nation's two largest cities.

The full schedule along with rules and regulations will be posted on the show's official Web site, www.idolonfox.com.
