Tried and true lead MTV awards nominations

MIAMI, July 25 (UPI) -- Familiar faces such as Green Day, Gwen Stefani and Missy Elliott dominated nominations for the 2005 MTV Video Music Awards announced Monday in Miami.

Sean "P.Diddy" Combs will host the awards ceremony broadcast live on MTV from Miami Aug. 28.

Performers during the live broadcast are scheduled to include Green Day -- with eight nominations -- Kanye West and Kelly Clarkson. Linkin Park's Mike Shinoda and rapper Lil John were busy writing an original score for the ceremony.

Behind Green Day with six nominations are Stefani and Elliot, followed by U2 with five, MTV said in a release.

More performers as well as presenters will be announced in the coming weeks.
