BOSTON, July 13 (UPI) -- "Masterpiece Theatre" announced its upcoming PBS season Wednesday, which will kick off with Rupert Everett in the role of Sherlock Holmes.

"Sherlock Holmes and the Case of the Silk Stocking," an original story based on Arthur Conan Doyle's supersleuth, will start the season on Sunday, Oct. 23.

"Rupert Everett puts a thoroughly new spin on Sherlock," Executive Producer Rebecca Eaton said in a news release. "He's charming, complex, and easy on the eyes -- the perfect 'Masterpiece Theatre' hero."

Other shows on tap include Robert Louis Stevenson's "Kidnapped" starring Iain Glen and James Anthony Pearson, and a new production of "The Virgin Queen," based on the life of Queen Elizabeth I starring Anne-Marie Duff.

"Masterpiece Theatre" also announced Wednesday actress Helen Mirren will return as Inspector Jane Tennison in a new "Prime Suspect," scheduled for 2006.
