"Rupert Everett puts a thoroughly new spin on Sherlock," Executive Producer Rebecca Eaton said in a news release. "He's charming, complex, and easy on the eyes -- the perfect 'Masterpiece Theatre' hero."

Other shows on tap include Robert Louis Stevenson's "Kidnapped" starring Iain Glen and James Anthony Pearson, and a new production of "The Virgin Queen," based on the life of Queen Elizabeth I starring Anne-Marie Duff.

"Masterpiece Theatre" also announced Wednesday actress Helen Mirren will return as Inspector Jane Tennison in a new "Prime Suspect," scheduled for 2006.
