Prayer-seeking Gibson stalker gets 3 years

VAN NUYS, Calif., June 23 (UPI) -- A stalker who kept trying to pray with Mel Gibson after "The Passion of the Christ" was released has been sentenced to three years in a California prison.

Zach Sinclair was convicted of a single count of stalking in March.

Celebrity Justice reports that Sinclair is a devout Catholic who wrote Gibson many letters asking to pray with him as well as coming to the star's home in Malibu. There were no allegations that Sinclair was threatening or attempted to harm Gibson or his family.

Sinclair represented himself during legal proceedings and, Celebrity Justice said, seemed confused.

Gibson belongs to a splinter Catholic group that believes the Roman Catholic Church took the wrong path with the Vatican II Council. "The Passion of the Christ" brought in millions at the box office and earned the admiration of many Christians, but was also controversial for its depiction of Jews and its graphic portrayal of Jesus's suffering.
