'Batman' sets records on IMAX screens

LOS ANGELES, June 21 (UPI) -- "Batman Begins" made record grosses in one format with the IMAX version pulling in $3.16 million.

The conventional release grossed $73 million in its first five days, zap2it reports. That is OK, but not spectacular numbers for a summer blockbuster.

"Batman Begins," which stars Christian Bale as the young Bruce Wayne, backed by such veteran players as Michael Caine as his butler, opened on 55 Imax screens around the country. The first day's gross was $754,000, another record for the format.

Warner Brothers says it "couldn't be more pleased" with the numbers. In July, the company plans a simultaneous IMAX and conventional opening for "Charlie and the Chocolate Factory."
