Northwestern grad takes play to Scotland

CHICAGO, June 14 (UPI) -- A Northwestern University film studies major is taking his play he wrote on a whim to Scotland to test it out at Edinburgh's famed Fringe Festival.

David Holstein, who graduates this month, wrote the play because he didn't know what else he wanted to do after college, says a news release from the Evanston, Ill.-based university.

Holstein will be joined by 10 other theater hopefuls on the Scotland trip. The play "True Genius" is about a young prodigy and pathological liar named Scooter pondering questions about love, life and reality.

Holstein says he began thinking about his graduation and envisioning "this great abyss that's supposed to be my life." That's when he thought of taking "True Genius" to Edinburgh.

Holstein's idea got support from John Logan, himself a Northwestern graduate whose Hollywood screenwriting credits include "The Aviator," "Gladiator" and "Any Given Sunday." Holstein's group will perform 25 shows between Aug. 4 and Aug. 29.
