Kyra Sedgwick stars in new cop drama

LOS ANGELES, June 12 (UPI) -- Film star Kyra Sedgwick says she wasn't looking for a TV job, but admits the role of a complex interrogator on the new cop drama "The Closer" was too intriguing to pass up.

"I fell in love with her contradictions," the "Singles" star recently told UPI about her character, Deputy Chief Brenda Johnson.

"She felt like a real woman to me. She's very strong. She's very fragile. She's struggling to do her job well with a lot of obstacles and she is also struggling to deal with her personal life and her history and what it means to be a woman, and what it means to be a shape and a size, and what it means to be strong and being called a bitch, and being able to just not care what people think of you."

The wife of actor Kevin Bacon said she liked the Georgia-born character's "southern-ness," noting how disarming her demeanor can be when she is trying to wrangle a confession out of a suspect.

"They're not expecting it and not expecting someone who looks and sounds like her to be such a strong woman -- a strong person who is good at their job," she observed.
