LOS ANGELES, June 10 (UPI) -- Former "Friends" star Matthew Perry will host U.S. cable's ESPN's 13th annual "ESPY Awards" that honor the best athletes, teams and sports moments.

The awards show, scheduled for broadcast July 17 will be taped in advance at the Kodak Theatre in Hollywood. Perry, in his first turn as host, takes over from actor Jamie Foxx, Zap2it.com reported Friday.

"This is my 10th ESPYs, and we've never had a more complete lineup, more compelling sports stories or a more enthusiastic host," says Maura Mandt, senior coordinating producer of the show.

"I have no doubt that the excitement and energy Matthew brings to everything he does will make the night something truly special for both avid and casual sports fans."

Growing up in Canada, Perry was nationally ranked on the junior tennis circuit and is a lifelong sports fan.
