Film group to honor Al Pacino

LOS ANGELES, June 10 (UPI) -- The American Cinematheque said Friday it will honor Oscar-winning actor Al Pacino with its 20th annual award.

"Al Pacino is truly a screen icon," said American Cinematheque board chairman Rick Nicita. "His stardom has shown brightly through four decades of memorable performances that have defined standards of acting excellence for generations of moviegoers."

Pacino has been nominated for seven Academy Awards. He won a Best Actor Oscar and a Golden Globe Award for the 1992 drama "Scent of a Woman," and also won a Golden Globe for the 1973 drama "Serpico."

He won an Emmy for his performance as Roy Cohn in HBO's 2003 adaptation of "Angels in America," and received the Hollywood Foreign Press Association's Cecil B. De Mille Award in 2001.

Pacino joins a list of previous American Cinematheque Award winners that includes Robin Williams, Steven Spielberg, Ron Howard, Martin Scorsese, Sean Connery, Mel Gibson, Tom Cruise, Arnold Schwarzenegger, Jodie Foster, Denzel Washington, Nicole Kidman and Steve Martin.

He will receive the American Cinematheque Award Oct. 21 in Beverly Hills, in ceremonies to be taped for January 2006 telecast over the American Movie Classics cable channel.
