Vaughn withdraws as director of X-Men 3

LOS ANGELES, June 1 (UPI) -- British film director Matthew Vaughn has quit the X-Men 3 project to spend more time with his family, 20th Century Fox announced.

The BBC said the "Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels" producer was to begin shooting the comic-book blockbuster in Canada and the United States. But when he realized he would have to move to Los Angeles and Vancouver for at least a year he withdrew.

The 34-year-old director has two children -- Casper, two, and six-month-old Clementine -- with his supermodel wife, Claudia Schiffer, the BBC noted.

The third film in the X-Men franchise would have seen Vaughn reunite with his Lock, Stock co-star Vinnie Jones, who has been cast as "900-pound battering ram" Juggernaut.

Frasier star Kelsey Grammer will appear as a furry blue mutant named Beast. Halle Berry and Hugh Jackman are also returning for the third X-Men movie, the Hollywood Reporter said.

Vaughn had replaced Bryan Singer, director of the first two X-Men films, who chose to, instead, direct the new Superman movie.
