DAYTON, Ohio, May 31 (UPI) -- The onetime teen singer Martika is enjoying a resurgence thanks to the rapper Eminem sampling her 1989 hit, "Toy Soldiers," for his "Like Toy Soldiers."
It comes at an opportune time, since Martika (real name Marta Marrero) and her husband, Michael Mozart, have just released the self-titled debut album by their band, Oppera.
"On the whole, people remember me for ('Toy Soldiers')," Martika says, "and to have it put out in the world on this level has been a really cool trip. It put a spotlight back over my head so I could shift it over to Oppera and what we've got going on."
Oppera is in the midst of touring Borders Books & Music stores to promote its album. The group will support Pat Benatar on a tour that begins June 15 in Clearwater, Fla.
