All-deaf rock band releases 1st CD

HONOLULU, May 23 (UPI) -- A Hawaiian trio billed as the world's only all deaf rock band has released its first CD, "Turn It Up Louder."

"After 30 years (of performing for deaf audiences), it's finally paid off," said Ed Chevy, bassist for Beethoven's Nightmare and an American Sign Language teacher.

"We want to say music is a universal language," Chevy said during Sunday's CD release party in Honolulu.

Koke-Kula Records & Publishing owner Ron Tish told the Honolulu Star Bulletin he worked with the band to tune its music for hearing ears and brought in hearing-able vocalists and musicians to produce the record.

Chevy said a second CD is in the works with fellow band members Steve Longo and Bob Hiltermann.
