Actor Frank Gorshin dead at 72

BURBANK, Calif., May 18 (UPI) -- Emmy-nominated actor Frank Gorshin, best known as The Riddler in the 1966 "Batman" TV series, has died in Burbank, Calif., at 72 years of age.

Gorshin died Tuesday at Providence Saint Joseph Medical Center with his wife, Christina, by his side, KNBC-TV in Los Angeles reported Wednesday.

"He put up a valiant fight with lung cancer, emphysema and pneumonia," Christina Gorshin said in a statement.

In addition to his Emmy-nominated role as the question-mark clad Riddler, Gorshin's TV credits included "General Hospital," "The Edge of Night," "The Munsters," "The Tonight Show Starring Johnny Carson," "Buck Rogers in the 25th Century," "Wonder Woman," "Charlie's Angels," and an Emmy-nominated guest appearance on "Star Trek."

The actor also made numerous Broadway appearances, most recently in 2002 portraying George Burns in the one-man show "Say Goodnight Gracie."

The actor is survived by his wife; his son Mitchell Gorshin of Orlando, Fla.; and sister Dottie Roland of Pittsburgh.

Gorshin's final performance is to be broadcast Thursday on the CBS-TV series "CSI: Crime Scene Investigation."
