HAWTHORNE, Calif., May 12 (UPI) -- A monument to the Beach Boys on the site of the Wilson brothers' boyhood home in California features the cover of their hit single, "Surfer Girl."
The official California historic site will be dedicated May 20 in Hawthorne with short sets by Brian Wilson, Al Jardine and David Marks, Rollingstone.com reports. In true California fashion, the house where Brian Wilson and his late brothers Dennis and Carl first became a group was torn down decades ago to make way for a freeway.
Scott Wilson, Dennis Wilson's son, came up with the design for the monument. The album cover is surrounded by a stage with six gold records embedded in brick.
"If you go over to England, they've got everything dedicated to the Beatles," Scott Wilson said. "The Beach Boys brought a lot to California -- the whole image of surfing, the beach and fast cars."
Mike Love, a Wilson cousin and the only member of the original Beach Boys playing with the current group, turned down an invitation to the dedication. He told an interviewer he was too busy making a living.
