Cannes to honor 'Star Wars' Lucas

CANNES, France, May 6 (UPI) -- The Cannes International Film Festival readied a tribute to "Star Wars" creator George Lucas and an honor for his more than 30-year career, the BBC reports.

The American, whose "Revenge of the Sith" is the latest in a "Star Wars" franchise that has sold $3.5 billion in tickets worldwide, is slated to receive the Cannes Festival Trophy aboard the Queen Mary II during the 11-day festival.

The 10 past recipients include British filmmaker Ken Loach; actors Gregory Peck, Sean Penn and Max Von Sydow; and actresses Melanie Griffith and Jeanny Moreau.

Lucas, 60, launched his career in 1971 with "THX 1138" and went on to direct "American Graffiti" and a series of Indiana Jones movies in addition to the six "Star Wars" films, the latest of which premiers May 15 at Cannes.
