BILBAO, Spain, May 6 (UPI) -- The Guggenheim Museum in Bilbao, Spain, said Friday it will open next month a permanent installation of seven new works by American artist Richard Serra.

The new large-scale metal works join the artist's existing work, "Snake," in a 430-foot long gallery in the Frank Gehry-designed museum, creating a site-specific installation "of a scale and ambition unparalleled in modern history."

"This historic commission of work by Richard Serra makes the museum a pilgrimage site for anyone interested in the present and future state of sculpture," said museum director Juan Ignacio Vidarte in making the announcement that the gallery will open June 8. "This huge gallery was envisioned to hold art of the 21st century, and Serra, working on such a monumental scale, is the perfect artist to realize its full potential."

The new installation is titled "The Matter of Time" and builds on the sculptural language developed by Serra in his "Torqued Ellipses" of the mid-1990s.
