Wind delays electric car speed challenge

WENDOVER, Nev., May 5 (UPI) -- High winds near Wendover, Nev., forced British engineers to delay their attempt Thursday to break the land-speed record set by an electric car.

Mark Newby and Colin Fallows developed the electric car, named e=motion, with two motors and variable speed drives to take aim at the 1999 record of 245 mph set by the American-built White Lightning in Nevada.

The engineers said e=motion's test runs showed promise.

"With this sort of performance, we're confident that our car will easily beat the existing electric car land speed world record," Newby said.

However, high winds Thursday forced a delay in the test of the car made by ABB, the company said on its Web site.
