Hollywood plans Marco Polo film

LOS ANGELES, May 3 (UPI) -- Plans are under way in Hollywood for a movie based on the adventures of explorer Marco Polo, Daily Variety said Tuesday.

The paper said William Monahan -- who wrote the screenplay for director Ridley Scott's new Crusades-themed movie "Kingdom of Heaven" -- has been hired by Warner Bros. Pictures to write a historical epic based on Polo's autobiography, "Travels of Marco Polo." The project is being planned as a star vehicle for Matt Damon.

Polo's 24-year journey in the 13th century took him farther into Asia than any other Westerner had ever gone.
