CHICAGO, April 29 (UPI) -- The Dave Matthews Band has agreed to pay $200,000 to settle allegations that a bus driver for the band dumped human waste on a Chicago tour boat.
The incident occurred August 8, 2004, after the bus stopped on the Kinzie Street Bridge as an architectural tour boat with more than 100 passengers aboard passed beneath the span.
A torrent of up to 100 gallons of yellow-brown human waste poured through the grates of the bridge decking onto the passengers and into the Chicago River.
Stefan Wohl pleaded guilty to the dumping in March and was fired. Wohl, 42, was sentenced to 18 months probation, 150 hours community service and fined $10,000.
The driver and the band were charged with water pollution in a three-court complaint for violations of the Illinois Environmental Protection Act.
The settlement requires the band to keep a written log of each bus waste tank disposal through April 2010.
"This settlement is reasonable and appropriate given the public and environmental health threats cause by this foul incident," said Illinois Attorney General Lisa Madigan.
