LOS ANGELES, April 26 (UPI) -- Comedian George Lopez is recuperating in Los Angeles after a successful kidney transplant with an organ donated by his wife.

The 44-year-old star of the self-titled ABC sitcom underwent surgery last week, and both he and his wife of 12 years, Ann, are in good condition, E! Online reported Tuesday.

Lopez's publicist said he suffers from a genetic disorder that caused his kidney to deteriorate, but did not elaborate.

Lopez is expected to be well enough to hit the publicity circuit for his upcoming movie, Dimension Films' "The Adventures of Shark Boy and Lava Girl in 3-D." The Robert Rodriguez-helmed feature is due in theaters June 10.
