NEW YORK, April 19 (UPI) -- The Muppets are backed by singer Ashanti as Dorothy and Queen Latifah as Auntie Em in a fresh take on the Wizard of Oz, the New York Post reported.

Miss Piggy plays the Wicked Witch of the West in "The Muppets Wizard of Oz," which is set for a May 20 broadcast on ABC.

ABC officials said the Muppets' version is based on the original book, "The Wonderful Wizard of Oz,," by L. Frank Baum and not the 1939 movie that starred Judy Garland.

Kermit plays the Scarecrow, Fozzie Bear is the Cowardly Lion and Gonzo takes on the role of the Tin Man in the TV production that is to be previewed next week at the Tribeca Film Festival in New York.
