LOS ANGELES, April 5 (UPI) -- Jimmy Smits and Alan Alda are reportedly expected to return for the seventh season of "The West Wing," NBC's popular White House drama.

This season's final episode, which airs Wednesday evening, ends with Smits' character, Rep. Matt Santos, going to fight for the Democratic presidential nomination with Vice President Bob Russell, played by Gary Cole, and Pennsylvania Gov. Eric Baker, played by Ed O'Neill, Zap2it.com said Tuesday.

Alda's character, Sen. Arnold Vinick, is the Republican presidential nominee.

Executive producer John Wells has said season seven will follow the general election campaign, as well as the final days of President Jeb Bartlet's administration and how the outgoing president, played by Martin Sheen, handles his transition to private life.
