2005 Venice art biennale to be its largest

VIENNA, April 5 (UPI) -- This summer's Venice Biennale will display the art of more countries than ever before under the direction of its first women organizers.

The exhibition committee for the world-famous event announced Tuesday that 73 countries have signed so far to be represented at the 2005 biennale, 10 more than two years ago.

The women running the sprawling exhibition occupying Venice's public park and its former arsenal are Maria de Corral and Rosa Martinez, both Spaniards, the announcement said.

Corral will organize the exhibition in the Italian pavilion in the garden where a majority of national pavilions will be located. Martinez will curate the exhibition at the arsenal in which younger artists are traditionally shown. Among the countries exhibiting for the first time are Morocco, Albania, and Afghanistan.

China, which has exhibited individual artists in the past, is having its own pavilion for the first time. It is being organized by Cai Guo-Qiang, a Chinese-born artist who created a pyrotechnic light show over New York's Central Park last year as part of the park's 150th anniversary celebration.
