Producer sues over 'Dolly' contract

LOS ANGELES, April 4 (UPI) -- A woman has filed suit in Los Angeles against the creators of the upcoming film "Dying for Dolly," claiming she was promised a spot as producer of the film.

Leigh Burton filed a civil complaint for breach of contract and false promise in Los Angeles Superior Court. She is seeking an unspecified amount of damages from Lions Gate Entertainment, Lions Gate Vice-President John Dellaverson, writer Chanel Capra, and the film's production company, DFD Productions, Inc.

Burton, an independent film and television producer, said she was approached in August 2003 by screenwriter Chanel Capra for assistance pitching the "Dying for Dolly" project to executives at Lions Gate Entertainment. Burton claims she agreed to assist Capra in exchange for being made a part of the project as a credited and paid producer. Burton said they filed a contract on those terms.

However, Burton said she discovered "Dying for Dolly" had wrapped filming in January 2005. She claims she contacted Lion's Gate through lawyers, but they have refused to honor her contract.

The film stars Usher and Chaz Palminteri and is set for release this fall.
