Mariah's faux royalty schtik irks Britons

March 24, 2005 at 1:38 PM   |   Comments

LONDON, March 24 (UPI) -- U.S. singer Mariah Carey turned heads in London for what appeared to many Britons as presumptuous self-indulgence.

The Daily Mail said Thursday the Miami pop star arrived 90 minutes late for an awards ceremony the day before -- because she was waiting for a professional to come fix a broken fingernail.

When she finally arrived at the awards ceremony, she was accompanied by 11 bodyguards whom she ordered to a perimeter around her for protection.

"Mariah swept in looking every inch the star, but it was a little over the top considering everyone else's low-key behavior," complained one onlooker.
