LOS ANGELES, March 24 (UPI) -- Principal photography is under way in Sydney, Australia, on Warner Bros.' "Superman Returns."

The film stars newcomer Brandon Routh with Kate Bosworth, Kevin Spacey and Eva Marie Saint. Routh, who has made TV guest appearances on "Cold Case" and "Gilmore Girls," has the title role.

A release date has been set for June 30, 2006, according to TeenHollywood.com.

"Rather than being a remake of the original movie," director Brian Singer said, "this film explores Superman's influence on our global culture and the impact of his return to Earth after an absence of several years."
