LONDON, March 21 (UPI) -- British rock icon Billy Idol released Monday in Britain his first studio album in more than 10 years, the BBC reported.

Idol, purveyor of such 1980s radio mainstays as "White Wedding," "Rebel Yell," and "Mony Mony," has already kicked off a tour to promote "Devil's Playground."

"I'd like to add to the body of work that I've done. I'm not exactly dead, and I love rock and roll," Idol said. "I'd love to have a hit record, but I'm not too worried about the charts -- this is all about adding to my work."

The snarling blond singer, born William Broad, will celebrate his 50th birthday later this year.

"Being in the throes of putting out a new album seemed the best way to celebrate it.

"Devil's Playground is my birthday card to myself," he said.
