George Lucas plans 3-D 'Star Wars'

LAS VEGAS, March 18 (UPI) -- Director George Lucas plans to remaster all six of his "Star Wars" movies for 3-D re-release, The Hollywood Reporter said Friday.

Lucas told an audience at the ShoWest movie industry convention in Las Vegas he wants to have the first film ready for a 30th anniversary rerelease in 2007. He would then rerelease one "Star Wars" film per year in 3-D.

Lucas was taking part in a panel discussion with directors James Cameron, Robert Zemeckis, Robert Rodriguez and Randal Kleiser. Director Peter Jackson took part via a pretaped segment -- in 3-D.

The six directors urged exhibitors to invest in the technology for converting to digital projection, so they could show 3-D features.

Cameron is working on the 3-D film "Battle Angel." Zemeckis, who made "Polar Express" in 3-D, is working on two more 3-D features.

Rodriguez plans to release "The Adventures of Shark Boy & Lava Girl" in 3-D this summer. Jackson -- currently filming "King Kong" -- has not announced plans to make a 3-D movie, but sources told The Reporter Jackson has set up a 3-D facility at his production offices in New Zealand.
