SYDNEY, March 18 (UPI) -- An Australian TV soap opera now 20 years running has attracted fans in Asia, Africa the Middle East and Europe, the BBC said Friday.
"Neighbors" focuses on the tortured love lives of teenagers and the emotional dramas of their parents in "Erinsborough," a fictitious district in the southern Australian city of Melbourne.
The show is watched by millions in dozens of countries, including Papua New Guinea, Dubai, Ghana and espcially Britain where more viewers tune in every week than live in Australia.
"One of the show's linchpins is a very Australian sense of humor where comedy surrounds serious stories," said producer Peter Dobbs.
"I think in the end not taking ourselves too seriously is something that hits a good nerve in Britain."
