Denzel begins B'way run in 'Julius Caesar'

NEW YORK, March 9 (UPI) -- Oscar-winning actor Denzel Washington has begun his run in the new Broadway production of William Shakespeare's drama, "Julius Caesar."

Peformances began Tuesday at the Belasco Theatre in New York, with an official opening night planned for April 3. The limited engagement is scheduled to end June 12.

As Brutus, Washington headlines the 30-member cast which also features Colm Feore as Brutus' co-conspirator, Cassius; Jessica Hecht as Brutus' wife, Portia; William Sadler as Julius Caesar; Tamara Tunie as Caesar's wife, Calpurnia; Eamonn Walker as Marc Antony and Jack Willis as Casca.

Directed by Tony Award-winner Daniel Sullivan, "Julius Caesar" is set against a political backdrop of tragic conflict as one heroic and noble man is tormented over the choice between loyalty to his country and loyalty to his friend.
