Bobby Fischer gets solitary confinement

TOKYO, March 8 (UPI) -- Japanese jailers threw chess champion Bobby Fischer into solitary confinement after he allegedly assaulted a guard, Mainichi Shimbun reported Tuesday.

A long-time friend of Fischer's who visited him in jail said the incident began when Fischer asked a passing guard last Wednesday if he could have an egg for breakfast. He grabbed the guard by his shirt, but the garment ripped.

A group of about 14 or 15 guards came into Fischer's cell to drag him away, but the grandmaster resisted and was handcuffed. Two hours later, as the handcuffs were being taken off, Fischer hit a guard in the face, after which he was put in solitary confinement.

Miyoko Watai, Fischer's fiancee, said she thought her betrothed had wanted an additional egg for breakfast.
