Blanchett wins supporting actress Oscar

LOS ANGELES, Feb. 27 (UPI) -- Cate Blanchett won the Oscar for Best Actress in a Supporting Role for "The Aviator," at the 77th Academy Awards in Los Angeles Sunday.

Blanchett was honored for her performance as Katharine Hepburn in director Martin Scorcese's movie biography of Howard Hughes.

"The Aviator" was up for a leading 11 Academy Awards going into the evening. It won two awards before Blanchett's -- for Art Direction and Costume Design.

In a new wrinkle at the Academy Awards this year, all tne nominees for the Art Direction Oscar were brought onstage at the Kodak Theatre as Halle Berry announced the winner.
