Televisa, Univision battle heats up

MIAMI, Feb. 16 (UPI) -- Televisa has banned its stars from appearing on Spanish-language TV titan Univision, jeopardizing Univision's upcoming Latin music awards show in Miami.

Univision Communications executives scrambled to replace more than 20 celebrity presenters at its Feb. 24 music awards show as well as other popular programs, whose guests regularly include Televisa soap stars, the Miami Herald reported Wednesday.

Emilio Azcarraga's Televisa provides almost all of Univision's primetime soap operas known as telenovelas.

Azcarraga, also a member of Univision's board, was angered Univision Chairman and Chief Executive Officer Jerry Perenchio recently promoted Ray Rodriquez to president and chief operation officer without an outside executive search, the newspaper said.

Televisa ordered its stars not to appear on any Univision show as an outgrowth of the dispute.
