FCC rules for cable operators in dispute

WASHINGTON, Feb. 11 (UPI) -- The FCC has rejected a move by broadcasters to force cable operators to carry all their digital television programming.

The vote was 4-1, Hollywood Reporter says.

Broadcasters argue that requiring cable companies to carry their digital offerings gives them an incentive to invest in the technology. Under current regulations, cable operators must carry only the digital "primary video channel," or the programming that most resembles the station's current lineup.

Some commissioners said they voted against the broadcasters because the industry has been willing to accept any public interest requirements for digital TV.
