MADRID, Feb. 8 (UPI) -- Famed filmmaker Pedro Almodovar and his brother quit Spain's Academy of Cinematographic Arts and Sciences because of "years of discord," a report said.
Pedro and Augustin Almodovar quit in December shortly after the Academy announced nominees for the 19th edition of the Goyas, Spain's most prestigious film awards, the Spanish news agency Efe reports. Pedro's "La Mala Educacion," or "Bad Education," was nominated for just four awards.
"It's not a question of more or fewer prizes because we have tons of prizes," Augustin said. "Our leaving (the Academy) has to do with the manner of union voting."
Augustin, himself a producer, said the decision was "the endpoint of years of discord."
The Spanish Academy last month awarded 14 of the 15 Goyas to Alejandro Amenabar's "The Sea Inside."
Augustin Almodovar denied the brothers' decision had anything to do with "The Sea Inside" being chosen as Spain's nominee to the U.S. Oscar competition.
