'Mary Poppins' tops Olivier nominations

LONDON, Jan. 21 (UPI) -- The British theatrical production of "Mary Poppins" has garnered nine nominations for the prestigious Olivier Awards.

Based on the 1964 Disney film about a gravity-defying children's nanny, has beaten the U.S. musical satire, "The Producers," for the most nominations, the Times of London said. Among the nominations are nods for "Poppins" co-stars Laura Michelle Kelly and Gavin Lee.

Mel Brooks' "Producers" landed seven nominations and Andrew Lloyd Webber's "Woman in White," five.

Nominations for Best New Play saw a mixed bag of productions. Judi Dench received her 13th Olivier nomination for her supporting role in "All's Well That Ends Well."
