LONDON, Jan. 12 (UPI) -- Former Beatle Paul McCartney and wife Heather donated nearly $1.9 million to help victims of December's tsunami.

McCartney and his wife donated the money to International Rescue Committee UK, an independent British charity that said it was "overwhelmed" by the McCartney's generosity, The Sun reported Wednesday.

British citizens have donated nearly $190 million to help Asian and African tsunami victims while the British government has pledged about $140 million, the newspaper said.
