Flooding, falling ice plague central U.S.

CINCINNATI, Jan. 7 (UPI) -- The year's first major winter storm moved east after causing flooding and ice storms in Indiana, Ohio and Northern Kentucky.

The National Weather Service issued a flood warning on the Ohio River for this weekend after more than a month's worth of rain fell in less than a week. The river was expected to reach its 52 foot flood stage at Cincinnati by Sunday, the Cincinnati Enquirer said.

High water closed U.S. 50 between Lawrenceburg Road and the Ohio-Indiana state line Thursday.

Ice-covered tree limbs snapped utility lines causing blackouts for thousands of people in Summit, Portage and Media counties. About 50,000 homes and businesses were without electrical power and some of the outages were expected to last until Saturday.

Two pedestrians, including a police officer, were injured by ice falling off skyscrapers in downtown Chicago. Some Loop streets were closed to traffic because of the ice danger.
