Hanks tops favorite movie star poll

ROCHESTER, N.Y., Jan. 4 (UPI) -- Tom Hanks recaptured the top spot in the Harris Poll's annual survey of America's favorite movie stars.

Hanks jumped up from his No. 4 finish last year after being the No. 1 choice of respondents two years ago.

This year's No. 2 spot went to Mel Gibson, last year's favorite among those asked, followed by Julia Roberts, the only woman in the Top 10. Johnny Depp was fourth followed by Harrison Ford, Denzel Washington, John Wayne, Clint Eastwood, Sean Connery and George Clooney.

The Harris Poll said Hanks was the top choice of both men and women who responded, as well as those who said they were Democrats. Mel Gibson was the top choice of Republican respondents while Robin Williams -- who didn't make the Top 10 overall -- was the pick of self-described independents.

The Harris Poll conducted its online poll Dec. 8-15 from a cross section of 1,015 adults across the United States. The sampling error is plus or minus 3 percentage points.
