Mary Poppins flies again

Dec. 16, 2004 at 11:50 AM

LONDON, Dec. 16 (UPI) -- London theatergoers are hailing a $17.5 million production of "Mary Poppins" at the Prince Edward Theater, the Daily Mail reported Thursday.

At one point in the performance, Laura Michelle Kelly soared over the audience clutching her famous umbrella to prompt a 10-minute ovation of the Cameron Mackintosh extravaganza.

Kelly, 23, has previously appeared in "My Fair Lady" and most recently a Broadway production of "Fiddler on the Roof."

The performance is based on the original 1934 book by Pamela Travers rather than the 1964 film starring Julie Andrews and Dick Van Dyke.

Travers intended her tale to be a dark tale and was said to have burst into tears when she first saw the saccharine-sweet Disney film, the newspaper said.
