Exhibit humanizes Romanov family

NEWARK, N.J., Dec. 16 (UPI) -- An exhibition of 250 personal mementos from the Romanovs humanizes Russia's iconic last Imperial family, says the show's curator.

Installed at New Jersey's Newark Museum, "Nicholas & Alexandra: At Home with the Last Tsar and His Family" uses photos, diaries, letters, clothing, toys and furniture to offer a rare glimpse at the Romanovs' personal lives.

"It really humanizes them. People feel that warm, personal element in this exhibition," curator Marilyn Pfeifer Swezey recently told UPI.

So, what is it about the czar's family, slain during the Russian Revolution nearly a century ago, that has captured the imaginations of so many Americans?

"There is really a mystique about them," Swezey said, adding there are several factors that contribute to their romantic appeal. "Their tragic end and also that they were such a beautiful family. ... And, of course, Americans are always fascinated with royalty because we don't have it."

The exhibition, which features numerous items never seen outside Russia, ends its run in Newark Jan. 9, but will be shown starting Jan. 29 at the Cincinnati Museum.
