Dick Clark to miss New Year's Eve show

LOS ANGELES, Dec. 13 (UPI) -- Regis Philbin will fill in as host of "Dick Clark's New Year's Rockin' Eve 2005" on ABC, a publicist for Clark said Monday.

Clark is recovering from what was described as a mild stroke, suffered last week. When he announced he had been hospitalized, Clark said he hoped to recover in time to do the New Year's telecast -- something he had done for 32 consecutive years.

Clark said he was grateful that Philbin was able to step in on short notice.

"I'm so glad that Regis hadn't yet made any New Year's plans," he said. "It'll feel strange watching it on TV but my doctors felt it was too soon."

Philbin called the gig the greatest "temp job" in the world.

"I just hope I can uphold the standards Dick Clark has set for this annual event, and I look forward to his return next year," he said.

"Dick Clark's New Year's Rockin' Eve" will feature performances by Big & Rich, Ciara, Earth, Wind & Fire, Fabolous, Good Charlotte, Billy Idol, Simple Plan and Ashlee Simpson -- who will serve as host for West Coast portions of the show.
